About the Newsletter "MILESTONES"

Central Asia has recently reemerged as a region of strategic interest. The rest of the world is increasingly paying attention to the region, and for good reason, Central Asia is facing a number of threats, from an emerging link between drug trafficking and terrorism to a general instability faced by all countries in transition but amplified by the region's geographical location.

Security and development are intimately linked in Central Asia and UNODC is widely recognized as a leading institution not only in strengthening interdiction capacities and reducing drug demand, but contributing to the overall sustainable and political development in the region. It is a special pleasure for me to present the UNODC ROCA’s “MILESTONES” newsletter. The launching of this newsletter marks the beginning of a new phase for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Central Asia. The following pages contain an update of UNODC’s activities and cooperation efforts in Central Asia and I hope that this newsletter gives you a better idea about our activities, our mandate, and our objectives in this unique part of the world.
